Kenyan delegation with CVIOG and Fanning Institute faculty

Kenyan and U.S. Women Leaders Exchange

Funded by a State Department grant to the International Center for Democratic Governance at the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, fourteen Kenyan women, all professionals with leadership roles in their Maasai communities, are touring Georgia to develop skills, network, and see first-hand what is needed to participate effectively in local government politics and policymaking. Fanning faculty member Raye Rawls presented information to the group on conflict resolution and mediation, and Brenda Hayes and Karen Holt spoke about legal and political challenges facing women leaders. Women from Georgia will travel to Kenya this fall to study and reconnect with the women they met here.

About Us

The Fanning Institute is a multi-disciplinary Public Service and Outreach unit of the University of Georgia.

Incorporating units that historically focused on community development, economic development, and leadership development, the Fanning Institute reflects an awareness that these areas are interdependent, and that sustainable community transformation must incorporate elements of each. Our faculty and staff use the knowledge and experience gained from working within these traditional fields to provide a rich and customized approach to addressing the complex problems facing communities and society.

In furthering the University’s land-grant legacy, the Institute fosters individual and community empowerment—linking the needs of people and communities with the expertise, research, and resources of UGA, its faculty, staff, and students.
