Planning is an approach to innovation and improvement—it is a people-based, people-managed process that applies to all levels of the University. Planning that is aligned with the University’s strategic initiatives ensures all stakeholders are engaged in the development and achievement of goals throughout the course of the plan. Effective planning also involves collaboration with institutional research and institutional assessment experts to develop the necessary support and tools for successfully tracking and monitoring plan performance.

While the University's strategic plan provides institutional vision, mission, and direction, it is integrated with several key plans that are developed at the operational level. Among those operational plans are the:

What is Strategic Planning?
Strategic planning is a process of discovery, reflection, discussion, community building, and priority setting through which an organization, like Kennesaw State University, defines its overarching direction and strategy, sets goals, and develops objectives and implementation steps necessary to achieve those goals. The strategic planning process generates goals that are aspirational, but also practical and feasible, through a broad-based process that depends upon the participation and engagement of the University’s administrators, faculty, staff, students, and constituents. The strategic planning process also results in a plan that is institutionally resonant—it reflects the unique characteristics and goals of that institution. The strategic plan communicates goals and actions needed to achieve the goals that are aligned with KSU’s vision and mission.
How do we ensure that every department and all members of the faculty and staff have opportunities to contribute to the creation of the plan?
The strategic planning process provides multiple opportunities for every member of the Kennesaw State University community (administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community affiliates) to share their observations, opinions, ideas, and recommendations. The process of discovery (information gathering) will include individual and small and large group interviews; focus groups; within-department and cross-department discussions; surveys of faculty, staff, students, and alumni; "idea walls," and an interactive retreat.
Furthermore, KSU’s Strategic Thinking and Planning (STP) Committee members are charged by the University’s president, Dr. Daniel S. Papp, to help guide the planning process. The STP Committee is comprised of individuals representing the diverse constituencies of KSU’s community. The planning process and the plan that results from it must recognize the needs, challenges, and aspirations of the members of University and its community.
How will I be kept abreast of progress throughout the strategic planning process?
Strategic planning works best when everyone is informed and included. The KSU community will receive regular updates on the progress of the planning effort through the Strategic Planning website, periodic emails, and announcements in faculty meetings, student group and government meetings, and administrative meetings in addition to updates at larger venues, such as the State of the University addresses.
How will the President decide on the distribution of resources to implement the Strategic Plan?
Resources will be strategically distributed based on a set of criteria that are defined by the President's Planning and Budgeting Advisory Committee (PPBAC). Each KSU unit will participate through the development of financial plans to support its role in implementing the strategic plan. In addition to resources distributed by the PPBAC, resources to support the plan can be generated by, but are not limited to, the following: reallocation of existing resources, cost reductions, fund raising, entrepreneurial activity, and increases in enrollment.
How will we know whether or not we are achieving the plan goals?
KSU engages several offices with the expertise to develop metrics, collect and analyze data, forecast, and report on the University’s progress in achieving its goals. Measuring performance is critical to knowing how an organization is progressing toward achievement of its goals. Defined performance measures are an objective way to see what is working and to help the University focus on what matters most. Assessment methods provide accurate data collection and deliver verifiable data and information to assist in making adjustments and improvements on a continuous basis.
