Faculty Academic Counseling

Academic Counseling is a free service offered by licensed counselors at the Division of Academic Enhancement to help students identify and overcome barriers that hinder their academic potential. Counselors assist students in exploring ways to make good academic decisions on their path to graduation.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What are some examples of barriers students might encounter before meeting with a faculty counselor at the Division of Academic Enhancement?
Students might struggle with anxiety surrounding academic assignments (tests, papers, dissertations), a loss of control over one’s life, a lack of self-confidence, balancing outside pressures (i.e., family, financial), and problems connecting to the campus life.

How can students make an appointment with a counselor?
Students can select a counselor from the list below and contact them via email to find a time to meet. Appointments are free and confidential.

What can a student expect in an academic counseling appointment?
Appointments take place in the counselor’s office in Milledge Hall. Counselors talk with the student to explore and identify issues that might be hindering their academic potential. After identifying these issues, counselors can then work with the student to overcome these barriers and connect them with relevant resources.

Debra Alvis

Dr. Alvis is a licensed psychologist and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).  She is trained as a mindfulness and yoga teacher with over thirty years of personal practice. She enjoys helping students find their unique paths for optimal growth and development. Dr. Alvis has worked with UGA students in various capacities since 1989. Her teaching and research interests include intellectual and psychosocial development, the neuroscience of learning, stress management, and the impact of mindfulness and yoga on academic skills.

Dr. Chris Pisarik is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Georgia and holds national certification as a counselor. As a counselor, he is supportive, caring, and open-minded. He focuses on providing guidance, structure, resources, and strategies that can enable individuals to reach their greatest potential. His counseling teaching and research interests include career development, self-concept and identity development, and academic motivation. Dr. Pisarik works hard to assist college students in developing healthy and meaningful lives through the college experience.
