DENTIST
Dentists examine and treat patients' teeth and oral tissues to prevent and correct dental problems.
Areas of Specialization:
- Endodontry
- Periodontics
- Oral Surgery
- Prosthodontics
- Orthodontics
- Public Health Dentistry
- Pediatric Dentistry
Work Activities:
- Examine teeth and gums
- Take and interpret x-rays
- Take impressions for artificial teeth and dentures
- Administer sedatives or anesthetics
- Supervise assistants cleaning teeth, mixing substances for tooth fillings, and keeping records
- Use and operate many specialized instruments
- Teach proper brushing and care of teeth
- Advise patients on most suitable treatments
- Perform surgery on mouth and jaw
Skills and Aptitudes:
- Knowledge of dental equipment, diagnostic techniques, and treatment
- Ability to convey concepts of preventive dental care to patients
- Computer skills
- Good judgment of space and shape
- Good verbal, written, communication and interpersonal skills
- Work well with people
- Strong math and science abilities
- Good hand-eye coordination
