CHEMIST

Chemists research the composition and structure of matter and the changes matter undergoes when converted from one form to another.

Work Activities:

  • Design and conduct research projects and apply findings to practical purposes
  • Create and improve products needed by industry and consumers
  • Design production and inspection procedures
  • Prepare and publish technical reports to explain findings
  • Analyze chemical compounds
  • Plan and supervise projects
  • Solve problems related to research, health and industry

Skills and Aptitudes:

  • Thoroughness and attention to detail
  • Think conceptually and visualize objects from drawings and descriptions
  • Ability to see slight differences in objects and make unbiased decisions based on data
  • Strong science and mathematics abilities
  • Good chemistry laboratory skills
  • Understand commercial software packages and computer programming
  • Strong verbal, math, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail and the ability to do precise work
  • Work independently or with members of a team
  • Good eye-hand coordination and eyesight
  • Catch on to things quickly and change easily from one task to another
