Requirements (U.S. Students)

GEC U.S. Students U.S. students applying for the Global Engagement Certification must meet the requirements listed on this page. Requirements differ slightly depending on whether the student is applying for certification or certification with distinction.

International students are eligible to receive the Global Engagement Certification too. If you are an international student, please visit the International Student Requirements section.


1. Global Coursework

Full list of approved global coursework

  • Undergraduate:
    Must have completed at least 12 semester hours of GEC-approved global coursework with a passing grade of C or higher.

    Graduate:
    Must have completed at least 6 semester hours of GEC graduate-approved
    coursework with a passing grade of B or higher OR undergraduate GEC approved coursework completed at a 3000 level or higher with a passing grade of C or higher.

  • Undergraduate:
    Must have completed at least 24 semester hours of GEC approved coursework with a passing grade of C or higher.

    Graduate:
    Must have completed at least 12 semester hours of GEC-approved coursework with a passing grade of B or higher or undergraduate GEC-approved courses at a 3000 level or higher with a passing grade of C or higher. Transfer coursework and study abroad classes may be approved.

2. Foreign Language Proficiency

  • Have successfully completed (with grades of C or higher) at least two years of foreign language at the high school level or two semesters at the college level
    or can demonstrate foreign language fluency at the high intermediate level or English is your second language.

  • Have successfully completed (with grades of C or higher) at least four semesters or the equivalent of the 2002 level of a foreign language at the college level, or can demonstrate foreign language fluency at the high intermediate level, or English is your second language.

3. Education Abroad Program

    • Have successfully completed a minimum of 28 days of education abroad through an academic/internship program while enrolled at KSU or
    • One education abroad program experience of any length and a substantive domestic project that focuses on international community engagement. A Global Engagement Committee member from the student’s college must approve all domestic projects unless service learning is embedded in the student’s study abroad program.

    • Have successfully completed a minimum 50 days on an education abroad program
      or
    • 28 days on an education abroad and a substantive domestic project that focuses on international community engagement. A Global Engagement Committee member from the student’s college must approve all domestic projects unless service learning is embedded in the student’s study abroad program
