Plant Families Workshop

Learn about plant families in Georgia as a way to understand the relationships among plants and to facilitate plant identification in the field. Study flower structure and other diagnostic characters of 10 of the most common plant families in Georgia, and apply that knowledge during an outdoors tour of the Garden’s plantings.

Beginner Scuba Class: Basic Open Water

These classroom and pool sessions to prepare participants for open water certification through PADI. Full participation is required for all classroom sessions and two pool sessions. Students need to be able to swim. Opportunities for open water dives to complete certification will be discussed in class. Through June 13.

Summer Tree Identification Workshop
Classes and Workshops
Learn to identify common trees of the Georgia Piedmont by their leaves, bark, branching patterns, and tree form. Use a hand lens and a dichotomous key for woody plants to identify species. Class time will be divided between classroom exercises and a field trip to the woods at the Botanical Garden.

Digital Plant Photography Workshop

"Flower Portraits and Plants in the Landscape." Learn about defining the subject, choosing a lens focal length, focusing, metering, isolating the subject, and lighting for flower portraits. Also learn how photographing in a larger setting differs from making plant portraits. A discussion of how light affects the larger scene, and about composing the image for emphasis.
