For this academic year 2010-2011, the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) has partnered with the Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute (BHSI) to create a new pilot program aimed at providing greater access to students and faculty interested in taking advantage of all the opportunities available for undergraduate research at UGA.
BetsyGoodwin&DrBlount Administered by the Honors Program, CURO has previously required a minimum 3.4 grade point average for the Honors research courses it has offered. Under the new partnerships, access will be extended to students whose GPA may fall below that minimum.
Read more about it here.
The Provost has currently approved the CURO Expansion with two partners for the academic year 2010-2011, the BHSI and the UGA Faculty of Engineering. Faculty torchbearers for the pilot program will serve on the CURO Council on an annual basis.
BHSI Faculty Torchbearers are: Claiborne Glover, biochemistry and molecular biology; Shelley Hooks, Pharmacy; Tim Hoover, Microbiology; John Maurer, Veterinary Medicine; and Jennifer McDowell, Psychology.
CURO BHSI efforts in the program are represented by a CURO Graduate Fellow, a Ph.D. student who serves as a link between CURO, the BHSI and undergraduate students taking part in the expansion program.
CURO BHSI Graduate Fellow Crystal Phillips (Microbiology) currently teachs the CURO-BHSI Gateway Seminar (BHSI 3070/3040) offered each fall and spring semesters. She assists undergraduates who wish to conduct CURO-BHSI research in specific departments with the application process, and will coordinate a CURO-BHSI symposium/forum in the spring.
The current course listing is available online.
Contact Linda Buffington at curobhsi@uga.edu for more information about how to enroll in CURO BHSI Gateway Seminars and participate in the new expansion program.
