The ARCS® Foundation, Inc. is a national volunteer women’s organization dedicated to supporting U.S. graduate and undergraduate students by providing scholarships in medicine, engineering and the natural sciences. ARCS or “Achievement Rewards for College Scientists” was formed in 1958 out of concern for U.S. advancement in the sciences. Since then, it has grown to include more than 17 chapters throughout the United States. Its volunteer members have raised more than $79 million and granted over 13,650 scholar awards at 52 leading universities. To learn more about the ARCS Foundation, go to www.arcsfoundation.org.
The ARCS Foundation and the BHSI
In the spring of 2000, former UGA Provost Karen Holbrook approached the ARCS Foundation’s Atlanta chapter about the possibility of support for top graduate students at UGA, particularly those participating in the programs of University’s Biomedical and Health Sciences Initiative. In consultation with the ARCS Foundation, the UGA Office of the Provost submitted materials in spring 2000 on behalf of the University of Georgia Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute, to the ARCS national organization to become a nominating institution for ARCS Scholars. Approval was granted by the national body of ARCS to provide support for UGA doctoral students in interdisciplinary biomedical and health sciences.
ARCS Foundation Award Application Information
UGA and the BHSI have been invited to select six new doctoral students for funding in 2012. These awards, in the amount of $7,500 per student, will be made during 2012-2013 academic year as supplements to any assistantship from the University. Recipients of the ARCS Foundation Award, who maintain their academic standing, are funded for three years or through the completion of their doctoral degrees (which ever comes first). Please note that mentors must nominate students and submit applications to the BHSI.
**Most importantly, for FY 2013, one of these six UGA ARCS Awards will be awarded as an ARCS Global Impact Award. This special scholarship of $10,000 will be awarded for one year to a UGA doctoral student whose research does or will have an international effect. For more detailed information about the ARCS Global Impact Award, click here.**
