The University of Georgia Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute (BHSI) was established in 2001 to coalesce and expand the research strengths of UGA and to develop new interdisciplinary curricula in these fields. The Institute was created to help increase the University’s accomplishments as a leading source for research discoveries, training, and new technology relevant to understanding, diagnosing, preventing and treating disease.

The BHSI is committed to achieving four key objectives identified by UGA faculty in this sphere:

• increase the breadth and intensity of the University’s biomedical and health-related research;
• identify and implement new strategies to ensure that as a result of faculty initiative and institutional commitment the program achieves international prominence;
• energetically pursue alliances focused on biomedical research with other research institutions and the private sector;  and
• capitalize on the unique ability of the University to integrate research with training to prepare a new generation of biomedical scientists and health professionals.
