Christine Beitl Wins 2011 Hudson Teaching Award

The 2011 Deparmtent of Anthropology Charles Hudson Teaching Award goes to graduate student Christine Beitl. When not in the classroom as an resource for undergraduate learners, Christine  studies the role of communities and collective action in the sustainable use of coastal resources, is interested in environmental problems that we as a society have created for ourselves and the role of collective action and cooperation in overcoming natural resource dilemmas and the problem of the commons. Dr. Julie Velásquez Runk and Dr. Bram Tucker are her major professors. Christine's winning this award means that she is automatically entered as a contestent in the Center for Teaching and Learning's graduate teaching awards.

Pholksinger Josh and the Andrew Small Band are celebrating with friends the release of their new record (the title of which their Web site neglects to mention) at the Go Bar this Saturday, April 16. It's a multi-act show, including LACSI favorites Incatepec, but Josh and his cohorts should take the stage around 9:00 p.m. Be there!

Graduate Student Makes Discoveries at Local American Indian Mounds

Bigman, Daniel

Archaeology graduate student Dan Bigman, assisted by other students, has been using remote sensing to determine more about the huge Mississippian-era (CE 800 - 1600) Ocmulgee mounds near Macon, GA. He's discovered a far larger population density than was previously thought, and hopes to use that information to learn more about social structure. The Student Association for Archaeological Sciences (SAAS) has recently put up a new, informative site that offers a taste of what UGA archaeology is all about. Full of links and photos of both upcoming and current events, it's an asset to students—undergraduate or graduate—in the department who want to experience, socially and professionally, the pursuit of archaeology in a state rich with remnants of past civilizations. The site is at saas.anthro.uga.edu and may also be reached by a link on the Department of Anthropology's Web site, anthropology.uga.edu.
