Undergraduate Programs Textile Science Minor

Yarn

As a company representation in any business, large or small, you are constantly making choices about textiles.  In addition, as a consumer you spend a significant amount of your yearly income and time on buying clothes, home furnishings, and sportswear.  How satisfied are you with your purchases?

Do you wonder about:

  1. if wool carpet is worth the extra cost, compared to nylon or polypropylene?
  2. why fuzz knots (called pills) develop on upholstery and sweaters?  Can these be prevented?
  3. which wears better, cotton or polyester?
  4. why some colors fade faster than others?
  5. what is “Super Wool”™
  6. why is wool warmer than cotton, but has to be dry cleaned, while cotton usually can be home laundered?
  7. why does cotton shrink so much?
  8. fabrics labeled “moisture management = more comfort”  and if they really work?  Are they worth the extra price?
  9. why the legs of my jeans twist around my ankles and feel so uncomfortable after laundering?

Textiles are everywhere!  Knowledge of their production, use, and care can provide a competitive edge to students wanting to prepare for the many careers related to this important global industry.   A minor in textile science will help you be a better consumer and make better choices.

A minor in Textile Science requires a total of 15 credit hours. Two required courses, Textiles and Textile Testing, will give you knowledge about fibers which are used to make fabrics and their care requirements.  Other courses, such as color science, textile dyeing and finishing, apparel and textile economics, and product development, allow students to tailor their program of study to a special area of interest or to meet specific career goals.  Students must meet all prerequisites for the courses selected in addition to CHEM 1110-1110L for Textiles and STAT 2000 for Textile Testing.

*Courses that satisfy a major requirement for TMI majors cannot be used to satisfy course requirements in the minor field of study.
