Outreach: Dr. Anderson directs a service-learning program as part of study abroad in Ghana. Dr. Anderson together with students from the University of Georgia engage in community health and nutrition screening, and education while in Ghana.

Research: Folate status and metabolism, maternal health, fetal development.
Interests: Dr. Bailey is interested in how changes in folate status impacts maternal and child health and interacts with other nutrients to maintain optimal health. She plans to expand the scope of her research to include new investigations related to the potential impact of obesity on the metabolism of folate and other micronutrients.

Interests: Tracey Brigman is a registered and licensed dietitian. Her experiences in a small community hospital and as the statewide dietitian for the Georgia Department of Corrections (where she was responsible for feeding 34,000+ inmates at over 72 facilities) have given her a depth of knowledge which she shares with her students.

Outreach: Diabetes education, eating disorders, low-fat food preparation; prevention of cancer, general foods and nutrition
Interests: Connie Crawley, a registered dietitian, serves as a resource person to the public, the media and other professionals in all areas of food and nutrition. Her special expertise is in diabetes and modification of recipes for control of all chronic diseases. She has also worked with adolescents and adults with eating disorders on a consulting basis.

Research: Diet and chronic disease prevention
Teaching: Diet and disease prevention and treatment
Interests: Oxidative stress may contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. One area of Dr. Fischer's research has focused on the effect of nutrients such as iron and vitamin E on antioxidant status, oxidative stress, and biomarkers associated with colon and liver cancer development. Recent studies have also included flavonoids, antioxidant compounds found in fruits and vegetables. Another research interest is the examination of food and nutrient intakes of elderly individuals.

Interests: Dr. Flatt's primary expertise is indirect calorimetry, using 16 automated respiration chambers to measure oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, heat production and respiratory quotients (R.Q.) of small laboratory animals. He also gives guest lectures on obesity, weight control and energy metabolism.

Research: Osteoporosis Prevention in Children and Adults; Body Composition Assessment; Pediatric Overweight
Teaching: Nutrition Throughout the Life Cycle and Medical Nutrition Therapy.
Interests: Dr. Lewis's primary area of research examines the bone responses to dietary interventions. His Osteoporosis Prevention Using Soy Isoflavones (OPUS) project is examining the efficacy and safety of soy isoflavones in postmenopausal women. He is conducting a zinc intervention trial in early pubertal children to examine the effects of zinc on bone turnover and is examining the links between overweight, vitamin D status and bone quality in children.
