In a Windows Explorer Window, right-click on the network folder or file for which permissions you wish to modify, and select Trustee Rights.

trustee1

This brings up the Novell Services Netware Rights window. The top section shows what trustees are set for the file/folder. The bottom section displays the eDirectory groups and users.

trustee2

Select the users or groups whose rights you wish to add to your file/folder and click on the Add button.

trustee3

The following defines the Trustee Rights:

S - Supervisor (all rights are granted)

R - Read (file reads are allowed)

W - Write (file writes are allowed)

E - Erase (files can be deleted)

C - Create (files can be created)

M - Modify (files can be modified)

F - File Scan (files can be viewed in a directory scan)

A - Access Control (trustee rights can be assigned)

Only the system Administrator can assign or remove Supervisor rights. By default, when a trustee is added, they receive 2 rights -- Read and File Scan. This allows them to read the contents of files, and to see files inside a directory. Other rights can then be added as desired by checking the appropriate box.

*CAUTION* Setting the Access Control trustee right allows that user to add or remove other users' rights to the file/folder. It is possible to actually remove your ability to subsequently control your own file permissions if you remove this right from your user object!

For most collaborative purposes, you will generally give all trustee rights except Access Control rights to your users.

trustee4

In NetWare, trustee rights assignments made at a given directory level "flow down" to lower levels until they are either changed or masked out. This is referred to as inheritance. To see what parent permissions have been inherited, click on the Inherited Rights and Filters button.

trustee5

If you wish to prevent rights from being inherited from parent directories, you can uncheck them in the bottom of the Inherited Rights and Filters window. Before doing so, be sure your explicit trustee rights have been assigned to the files/folders so only those users that are allowed have access to the files/folders, but not those in the parent directories.
