About Us

Guided by the signature “Knowledge for Real Life,” faculty and students in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences are responding to some of the most challenging issues facing us today.

FACS faculty and students are studying and applying the principles of design and business, the sciences and technologies to develop healthier people and thriving communities through more effective educators and a high-tech global workforce.

More than 70 faculty, 1,400 undergraduates and 200 graduate students are involved in teaching, research and outreach programs in the fields of child and family development; foods and nutrition; housing and consumer economics; and textiles, merchandising and interiors.

The College of Family and Consumer Sciences is the fifth largest at the University of Georgia and is known as one of the most student-centered colleges on campus. Both students who major in FACS fields and those who take our courses as electives are quick to praise our faculty and staff for the attention we provide students. Our alumni are frequently in touch with favorite instructors and offer high praise for the rigor of the classes and the excellence of the instruction.

Students and faculty in the College enjoy the generous support of donors. Each year more than 50 students receive funds to support their studies and research through fellowships and scholarships totaling more than $100,000. These scholarships range from support for study abroad opportunities to research support and rewards for academic excellence. We also sponsor the Undergraduate Research Program, which provides students the opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor on a funded project.

The College’s Office of Student Services is the place to gain the information you need before deciding if Family and Consumer Sciences should be your college home. Our students have multiple opportunities to join student clubs and organizations, such as the Student Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, the College Ambassadors program, and clubs in each of the departmental areas. Students also can take advantage of a variety of study programs, including study abroad programs in Mexico, Ghana and London, as well as programs in New York City and Washington, D.C.

Many FACS faculty have been recognized both nationally and internationally for their accomplishments. The endowed professorships in the college include the Georgia Power Professorship in Textile Science held by Ian Hardin; the Janette McGarity Barber Distinguished Professorship held by Sharon Nickols, the Bill and June Flatt Professorship in Foods and Nutrition held by Mary Ann Johnson, the Georgia Soft Goods Education Foundation Distinguished Professorship held by Charles Gilbert, the Anne Montgomery Haltiwanger Distinguished Professorship held by Jay Mancini and the Athletic Association Professorship in Family and Consumer Sciences held by John Grable.

We are proud of our heritage and excited about our future. Whether you’re a prospective student, a current UGA Bulldog, a parent or someone who needs expertise we can provide, I warmly welcome you to the College of Family and Consumer Sciences!

Best Wishes,
