Student Leadership

he Office of Orientation and Transition Programs (OTP) provides multiple programs to the campus community, specifically serving incoming students and their parents. The purpose of these programs is to help students and their parents adjust successfully to college. Two primary programs that we offer from our office includes Ignition New Student Orientation and Owl Expedition. Both programs have a student leadership component that aids in its success. We are looking for enthusiastic, diverse, and involved students who have a true passion for Kennesaw State University and who are wishing to add additional leadership skills to their repertoire.

Ignition Leader Program

  • IGNITION (a.k.a. Orientation) is one of the primary programs we offer through the office. The team of Ignition Leaders (ILs) will provide leadership to the student and parent IGNITION programs and are critical to their overall success.  Ignition Leaders also engage in aspects of the office programming throughout the year including Parent and Family Association (PFA) programming, and Transition Programs. 

    • Be enrolled full-time as an undergraduate student in the Fall 2017, Spring 2018, Summer 2018 and Fall 2018 semesters.
    • Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA while employed.
    • Be willing and able to make the Ignition Leader responsibilities a first-priority commitment during the summer.
    • Have a sincere desire to serve KSU’s incoming students and their families.
    • Have the ability to receive leadership and guidance from undergraduate peers.
    • Possess a genuine enthusiasm and loyalty to KSU.
    • Have a good sense of humor balanced by a sense of responsibility.
    • Possess the potential for excellent communication skills (we do a lot of training on this)!
    • Willingness to accept a challenge.
    • Willingness to step out of your comfort zone in order to better engage the diversity of all orientation participants.
    • Be a role model for incoming students and uphold the IGNITION standards of excellence.
    • Attend all assigned IGNITION sessions throughout the year (100% attendance is expected).
    • Attend the Summer IL Retreat.
    • Attend the SROW Leadership Conference.
    • Attend all weekly IL training meetings.
    • Collaborate in the development and improvement of the IL Program and other programs offered through the office.
    • Significant experience developing and incorporating departmental initiatives while leading peers.
    • Fun and rewarding service to KSU.
    • Great opportunity to develop professional and personal relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
    • Priority registration time ticket for Summer 2018, and Fall 2018 semesters.
    • Lots of free food during the Ignition sessions.
    • Opportunity to attend conferences and other types of professional development opportunities throughout the year.
    • Ignition Leader uniform and KSU attire/swag. 

Flight Crew Leader Program

  • Owl Expedition provides first-time, first-year KSU students an opportunity to learn further about their university and its resources; meet and interact with their new classmates and fellow peers, as well as faculty and staff; and promote student involvement with hopes of retention beyond the first year of school.

    Flight Crew Leaders will be instrumental in the planning and successful implementation of the program. Chosen students will have the special opportunity to be involved in an exciting approach to sharing and promoting school spirit and what it means to be an Owl at the new Kennesaw State University. Flight Crew Leaders will serve as small group facilitators and peer mentors to a group of approximately 10-12 incoming first-year students before, during, and after the camp.

    • Be presently enrolled full time (12+ hours) at Kennesaw State at time of application, and be in good academic standing with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.
    • Be enrolled full-time (with the exception of summer 2017) in spring 2018 and fall 2018, and in good standing through 2018.
    • Possess genuine school spirit and enthusiasm for KSU and have a desire to share your student experience with incoming students.
    • Have completed or will complete one full semester at KSU at the time of submitting application.
    • Own a sense of excitement in creating new traditions and honoring those already existing.
    • Be in good disciplinary standing and show involvement on campus.
    • Have the ability to understand and follow all university policies and procedures.
    • Be willing and able to work with diverse constituencies.
    • Act as a peer leader, role model, and mentor for approximately 10-12 students through and after Owl Expedition.
    • Plan and implement a minimum of 4-6 Owl Group meet-ups or mini reunions during fall semester 2018.
    • Serve on and participate in one of four staff chosen committees:
        • Spirit and Traditions: Focus on creating fun and festive elements by encouraging school pride, creating cheers and chants, and coordinating a spirit competition.
        • Logistics: Integral to gathering and arranging all materials and supplies, as well as coordinating behind-the-scenes work before and during the event.
        • Sponsorships: Work on gathering financial and tangible donations from KSU, and community entities.
        • Marketing: Serve as the marketing team for Owl Expedition through media and print development, and outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram before, during (including a slideshow) and after the event.
    • Encourage students to make the most of their experience at the university by emphasizing awareness of various student activities and opportunities.
    • Act as liaisons with members of the KSU communities (e.g. Registered Student Organizations) and the cities of Kennesaw and Marietta when recruiting participants.
    • Exhibit an understanding of, and a willingness to learn, aspects of Kennesaw State and Southern Polytechnic State and bridge gaps as the new university.
    • Able to work independently and collaboratively.
    • Dispense information about the campus, various programs and activities, and provide information on university procedures and policies.
    • Show enthusiasm, loyalty and dedication to the new Kennesaw State University.
    • Exhibit strong public speaking, communication, and interpersonal skills.
      Encompass strong customer-service skills; have a positive, helpful, “can-do” attitude.
    • Be willing and able to establish and maintain professional working relationships with prospective students, parents, counselors, office and university staff, and external stakeholders.
    • Maintain confidentiality with fellow staff and office information.
    • Must be able to lift, carry or transport boxes and materials (push carts and hand trucks are available).
  • Flight Crew Leaders will gain significant, resume-building leadership experience and will have the opportunity to create traditions for the new KSU, while honoring current ones for both KSU and SPSU. In addition, Flight Crew Leaders will learn what it means to be a peer mentor and have an understanding of issues and concerns facing our new students, and how to assist in their transition to college. Benefits include a yearly stipend, meals, training materials, and KSU gear. Camp expenses such as transportation, lodging, and meals are also included.

    • What can I expect during the group interview?
      During the group interview you will be partaking in a series of activities with other Student Leader candidates. The most important thing is to come ready to be an active participant and to just be yourself!

      Please consult the Career Services Center’s website for information on business casual and professional attire for interviews.
