Prior Learning Assessment

Prior Learning Assessment allows learners to earn credit for college level learning through various forms of assessment. Prior learning assessment, experiential learning, alternative credit or credit for prior learning, are many names for the same pathway to college credit.

College level learning gained outside of a traditional academic setting may come from varied sources; work experience, military service, training programs, community service, independent study, professional certifications or even open source courseware.

In 2011 when the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and the Governor of Georgia approved the Complete College Georgia initiative, KSU was one of the early adopters and implementation planners.  The initiative identified the need for adult and military students to achieve their life-long educational goals.  The implementation plan changed the traditional learning methods to accommodate life-long learners through new course delivery options, experiential learning and practical ways to link learning from life and work experience to educational goals.
