This most recent fiscal year proved yet again what all of us at UGA know very well – that continued success in times of state budget crisis depends on the financial support and generosity of those who care deeply about the mission and goals of this institution. We are deeply grateful to each of you for your support, your counsel and your commitment to the University of Georgia. But even in the face of serious challenges, we have as a university taken the long look that all organizations must take in order to guide resource placement and decision making for the next decade. With broad input from faculty, staff and students, we have developed a strategic plan for the next 10 years. The plan envisions a University of Georgia that honors and strengthens UGA’s historic commitment to undergraduate education while growing it into a world-class graduate and research institution.

2010 President’s Report to Donors
The year 2010 marks the 225th anniversary of the signing of the charter for the University of Georgia. The charter written by Abraham Baldwin is nothing short of a revolutionary document, for it posited the idea that higher education is a public, not a private, good. It asserted that there is societal value in a state offering higher education to its citizens and that an educated populace was a desirable goal. That now common but then remarkable idea was born in Georgia. Today, we are the stewards of that idea. A virtually unbroken line traces the history of this place from charter to enrollment to first graduation, from campus expansion to the Civil War to World Wars I and II, from 10,000 to 20,000 to more than 34,000 students. It is our obligation to ensure that the line of history continue, that the University of Georgia remains a place of impact and import centuries from now. We must pass on to those who follow us what was handed down to us – a sacred trust and a charge to provide the highest level of public higher education to the people of this state.
