Lunch and Informational Open House

As you plan your summer schedule, you may want to consider enrolling in the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic. To learn about the Tax Clinic stop by the Clinic’s offices (ground floor across from Career Services) during an open house on March 12 at noon for pizza or any day between 9-5, to learn about the Clinic. Following is a brief description of the Clinic. The Tax Clinic has been operating for over 20 years as a nationally recognized component of the College’s lawyer skills development program. It has assisted hundreds of students develop essential skills needed to successfully practice law. The Tax Clinic is a controversy clinic. Student attorneys represent low-income taxpayers who have disputes with the IRS. The Clinic is not designed to be a tax course nor is it intended to provide substantial litigation training. Most students who enroll in the Clinic do not intend to practice tax law.

Clinic students are assigned several cases and deal directly with clients. They are called upon to exercise professional judgment in a law-firm setting by gathering and assembling the law and facts that are set forth in briefs submitted to the IRS’s Office of Chief Counsel, Appeals, and Collections. Students draft memoranda, interview clients and engage in the typical activities of first year law firm associates. Employers have noted that students who take the Tax Clinic are well prepared to practice law.

To qualify for admission to the Clinic, you must have completed Basic Tax and have an overall average of at least 2.3.
