Monday, April 2, 2012, 3 - 4 pm
Location: Room 170
Khalil Meek is a co-founder of the Muslim Legal Fund of America and current Executive Director. The Muslim Legal Fund of America is a 501(c)(3) charity that supports legal cases impacting civil rights and liberties in America. MLFA is comprised of staff, volunteers and supporters from all walks of life who have one thing in common: the belief that treating people unfairly because of their religious beliefs undermines the core values that make America great.
Everyone has a right to competent and zealous legal representation. In the current political climate, negative stereotypes of Muslims permeate the media to such an extent that Muslims suffer from significant public bias. Such bias often results in pervasive legal difficulties for many Muslims in America as they face discrimination in the work place, in schools, in public areas, and within the criminal justice system.
MLFA supports cases and coalition efforts that seek to protect due process of law, the right to habeas corpus, religious freedom, prisoner rights, and other fundamental legal issues that go to the heart of our society's values. While the defendants or plaintiffs may be Muslim, the outcomes of these cases impact the civil rights and rule of law for all Americans.
MLFA protects these freedoms by meeting these challenges with the financial and logistical resources required to defend our American way of life.
