Welcome to the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at Columbus State University. We are strongly committed to excellence in language and literature study. At present we offer the following degree with two separate tracks:

  • B.A. in Modern Language and Culture, Spanish with Teacher Certification track
  • B.A. in Modern Language and Culture, Spanish Literature and Culture track

Curriculum and outcomes

Our curriculum is designed to prepare undergraduates for critical thinking and employment flexibility. The department's philosophy emphasizes faculty-student contact outside the classroom and individual attention for our majors and minors. We are proud of our program's practical outcomes over the past six years:

  • ALL our graduates in the Teacher Certification track secured employment teaching HS Spanish in Georgia and elsewhere
  • ALL our graduates who applied to graduate school were admitted into regionally or nationally-recognized programs

Our faculty's expertise encompasses a broad range spanning Latin American literature, Hispanic women's writing, Spanish and Latin American culture, Hispanic linguistics, and the use of technology in the Humanities. Our students can take classes at the Elementary and Intermediate levels in French, German, Japanese, and Latin. We also offer Elementary Arabic classes.

Activities & Events

Our students enjoy opportunities to practice their target languages outside the classroom with activities like conversation tables, film nights, and guest-speaker events.  Our campus has a chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, a national Honor Society for students of Spanish.
