"Race and Gender in Cosplay" Panel
Location: Sturgis Library 101
Cosplay (a portmanteau of “costume” and “play”) is a type of performance art where a person, known as a cosplayer, portrays a character from a novel, comic, TV show, movie, or other pop-culture medium. The panel will address questions such as: When is it appropriate to portray a character that is a different race, and how can that race be performed - where is the line between costuming and 'black-face'? When is it appropriate to portray a different gender - when is it drag, and when is it cross-dressing - and does gender-bending minimize the struggle of trans people?
