The search for the replacement of the University of Georgia Telephone system began in 2007, with the initial investigation into the details required to launch the RFP process. Subsequent work with the Ga. State procurement office of DOAS identified ATT as the company of choice for the implementation of the new Avaya system. The project was officially awarded to ATT near the end of December and the EITS project team has been working diligently with the ATT project manager to develop a schedule for the replacement activity, which is estimated to take between 12 and 18 months to complete.
The next-generation telephone system will support traditional analog, digital, and VOIP (Voice Over IP) telephone sets. During the course of the project, it is estimated that 6,000 telephones will be replaced with either digital or VOIP technology. A detailed planning effort will be undertaken with Departmental Telephone Representatives (DTR´s) to help formulate both the exact timeline for departmental cutovers, as well as to coordinate the replacement for the phone handsets that will be required during the transition.
