The Office of the Dean of Students, within UGA's Division of Student Affairs, seeks to enhance the educational experience for all students and to help build a sense of campus community through a wide variety of programs and services for individuals and for student groups. Programming within the dean's office is divided among three organizational units: Intercultural Affairs, Student Life and the Tate Student Center.
William McDonald
William M. “Bill” McDonald has been the Dean of Students at the University of Georgia since January 1, 2011. Dean McDonald's prior experiences include: 8.5 years as Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students at Presbyterian College; twelve years as Vice President and Dean of Students at Carson-Newman College; and nine years of residence life experience at University of Memphis, University of Georgia, Catawba College and Lenoir-Rhyne College.
Dean McDonald's professional interests include: assessing student perceptions of community with their institution, building campus community, diversity training, ethical decision making, and developing model partnerships between academic and student affairs. He was the recipient of a $95,000 grant from the Strengthening Teaching and Learning in the First Two Years, an Initiative of the Pew Charitable Trusts in 1992. Most recently he served as the co-director of the Boyer Partnership Assessment Program, a $417,000 Fund for Improving Post Secondary Education grant to assess academic and student affairs partnerships across the nation from 2001-2005.
Dean McDonald has been active in several publications. Notable examples include his serving as a participating author in Outcomes for Students of Student Affairs-Academic Affairs Partnership Programs, published in the Journal of College Student Development in 2006. He was a contributing author to Learning Reconsidered: A Campus-Wide Focus on the Student Experience, published by the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) in 2004. He served as the editor of Creating Campus Community: In Search of Ernest Boyer’s Legacy, a book published by Jossey-Bass, Inc. in 2002. Dean McDonald was one of four editors of Community Found: Best Practice of Community Development Models, a special edition of the College Student Affairs Journal, published by the Southern Association of College Student Affairs (SACSA) in 2002. Finally, he was the lead author of Collaboration and Community: Boyer’s Guiding Principles, an invited paper published by NASPA in 2000.
Dean McDonald has been recognized for his leadership and scholarship by several professional associations. ACPA selected him as the recipient of the 2011 Annuit Coeptis Senior Professional Award and as a Senior Scholar in 2006. South Carolina College Personnel Administrators (SCCPA) selected him as the recipient of the Joseph O. Nixon Award for Chief Student Affairs Officer in 2008 and as the recipient of the Paul P. Fidler Bridge Builder Award in 2007. SACSA selected him as the recipient of the Melvene Hardee Award in 1998. All five awards recognize contributions to student affairs research and practice. In addition to these awards, NASPA Region III selected Dean McDonald as the recipient of the Bobby E. Leach Award for “service to students” in 2000; and SACSA awarded the Dissertation of the Year Award to him in 1997.
Dean McDonald holds an Ed.D. from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, an M.A. from Appalachian State University and a B.A. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Dean McDonald is originally from Elkin, North Carolina. He and his wife, Anne (UGA M.Ed. '89) have two daughters, Margaret and Hannah. Dean McDonald's hobbies include researching the Lewis and Clark Expedition as well as enjoying camping, swimming and reading.
