Appropriate Attire

It is recommended that, beneath the gown, candidates wear dark, professional attire and shoes to complement the black academic regalia of Kennesaw State University.

Please do not bring handbags or other personal items, as there is no way to secure the line-up rooms during the ceremony.

Caps and Gowns

Graduation is an exciting time at Kennesaw State University as student accomplishments are celebrated throughout campus, culminating with a commencement ceremony.   In preparation for this significant occasion, it is essential that graduates wear the appropriate graduation attire and commencement regalia.  Below are guidelines for the wearing of academic regalia.

  • Undergraduate degree candidates wear a black gown with the KSU gold stole, black mortarboard (cap), and black tassel with a gold medallion.  (Note: The tassel is worn on the right side of the mortarboard (cap) prior to the degree being conferred and on the left side after the degree is conferred.)

    Honors for Undergraduate Students

Students receiving honors for their undergraduate degrees are acknowledged at the commencement both by gold-colored honor tassels (issued by the Office of the Registrar during line-up on graduation day) worn with the graduation mortarboards (caps) and by public announcement as they cross the stage.

  • Master’s and Specialist degree candidates wear a black gown designed with two tabs embroidered in Gold with the KSU school seal, a hood, and black mortarboard (cap) with black tassel and gold medallion.  The hood worn is the most distinctive feature of this academic attire.  Each hood has a separate color* based on their discipline.  Education Specialist hoods are somewhat different in that they are longer and wider than the Master’s hoods.

  • Doctoral Degree candidates wear a gold gown featuring black velvet panels and bars accented with the KSU seal embroidered in gold. The cap is a six corner black velvet tam with two gold tassels.  The Doctoral hood is most distinctive using black with a gold and black satin lining and accented with the designated discipline color* in velvet.

See the KSU Bookstore for information on purchasing regalia and personalized announcements and graduation items.

For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctoral gowns, edging of hoods, and tassels of mortarboards (caps), the colors associated with the different disciplines, as listed in the American Council on Education guidelines, are as follows:
