  • Step 1 - Project feasibility - review and approval

    See the shop staff to discuss the feasibility of your CNC project request. We will advise you as to:

    • The suitability of using a CNC Router for what you want to do
    • What CNC Router equipment, if any, is the best fit for your project
    • What materials we would recommend or require that you procure (this might include router bits)
    • What file type will be needed for your project (.STL or .DWG)
    • How the materials can be held for routing and any difficulties that might be incurred with your project

    After getting approval for CNC Router use, and understanding the requirements, you may proceed with the next step.

    Step 2 - Preparation of Project file(s):

    Print out pages 1 & 2 of the CNC Router Project Form and bring it completed, along with your object file (on a thumb drive), to Dave or Kevin in the shop. We will import your object file(s) into Aspire, the CNC modeling and machining software that we use to generate the tool path GCODE that the CNC uses. We will work with you to review the object/project, determine the best options for bits and tool paths to use for your project, and suggest modifications if needed. This may take 10 minutes, or it might take an hour, depending on the complexity of your project. If modifications to the object file are necessary, this process step will need to be repeated.

    Step 3 – Running the Project and Clean-up

    Use of the CNC Router is on a first ready, first served basis – working from when a project is ready to run on the machine, which means the following:

    • The object file has been reviewed and executable machine tool path code has been generated
    • Materials are on site and ready to mount on the machine
    • Appropriate bits are on site and ready for use
    • You are available to help load the machine
    • You are available to assist with securing material to the machine
    • You have arranged for the prompt clean-up of the machinery upon the job completion (if the job requires multiple runs, you will be expected to clean the machinery after each run in preparation for the next run)

    We DO NOT ACCEPT RESERVATIONS on the CNC equipment, as the job durations are indeterminate, and we cannot be sure that a job will be ready to run on the equipment until all of the above criteria have been met successfully.

    The student may be required to provide router bits for custom work or for use on abrasive materials. 

  • 3D Print Job Request Form:

    • 3D printers are for Architecture use only and must be for a valid Architecture project.
    • All 3D print files must first be approved by STAFF, and then signed by your professor.
    • Files to be printed should be located in the root directory of your USB drive.
    • You will be notified by email when your job is complete.
    • Objects that can easily be made in the shop will not be 3D printed.
    • 3D Print Quickstart Guide: Contains information on the process for preparing, exporting, and submitting objects for 3D printing.
    • Architecture Laser Manual: Contains all the information on setup and operation of the 5 lasers and step by step instructions on how to use the lasers with your DWG files.
    • Laser Reservation Guide: The laser reservation system can be accessed from any browser or smart phone with internet access. Reservations are only valid if claimed within the first 10 minutes of the hour reserved. Otherwise, it’s first come first serve for the remainder of the hour. Laser Reservation Calendar
    • Laser 24 x 36.dwg: A copy of the file for pasting your cut files into for cutting on lasers 1, 3, 4 & 5 (the Legend XTs). Please feel free to preload your data in the file. Be sure to rename the files as you save them.
    • Laser 18 x 24.dwg: A copy of the file for pasting your cut files into for cutting for laser 2 (18 x 24 bed, the HELIX). Please feel free to preload your data in the file. Be sure to rename the files as you save them.
    • AP Laser Manual: Contains all the information on setup and operation of the large-format AP laser and step by step instructions on how to use the laser with your DXF files.
  • Vacuum Forming Guide: Contains instructions on how to operate the machine. It does not include recommended settings for various thickness and types of plastic. We will add that as the data becomes available.
